Research Specialty and Interests

My research program focuses on the ecology, epidemiology, and control diseases of wheat caused by soilborne fungi. The overall focus is to develop sustainable methods of disease management with an emphasis on novel approaches and methods of identifying resistant germplasm and new sources of disease resistance, especially in wild relatives of wheat, mapping and development of genetic markers for resistance genes, and population genetics of pathogens. My program also focuses on cultural practices with soil amendments and chemical control, including pathogen resistance to fungicides. Another project focuses on characterizing plant pathogenic bacteria in the genus Rathayibacter that cause gumming diseases of grasses including wheat and their seed gall nematode (Anguina and Afrina spp.) vectors to determine species present in the western US and to develop rapid detection methods.
