Visitors from Russia

Dr. Sergey S. Sanin, Director of All-Russian Research Institute of Phytopathology (VNIIF) and President of Russian Phytopathological Society, and Dr. Tagir Z. Ibragimov, Head of Laboratory of Information Technology, VNIIF, Moscow Region, Russia, visited our department from November 30 to December 14, 2001. During their visit, they presented seminars on cereal crop diseases and disease management in Russia; and disease modeling, forecasting, and use of information technology in cereal disease control. They exchanged information, knowledge, and ideas on plant disease research with faculty, post-doctors, and graduate students of Plant Pathology and Crop Science departments. With Dr. Xianming Chen in our department, Dr. Sanin and Dr. Ibragimov have been developing an international collaborative project on research of epidemiology and control of cereal crop diseases.

Mycological Herbarium Visitor

A recent guest of Professor Rogers was Mr. Florent "Flo" Trouillas from University of California-Davis. Flo was especially interested in the herbarium collections of Diatrypaceae (Ascomycetes; Pyrenomycetes). He and Rogers discussed the biology and systematics of these fungi. Flo is investigating Eutypa species on grape vines in the Napa Valley.

An interesting sideline. Flo works in the laboratory of Doug Gubler who took mycology from Rogers at a summer session at the University of Minnesota summer session at Lake Itasca in the 1970's. Moreover, many of the fungal collections that Flo examined were made by Dr. Dean Glawe, Director, WSU-Puyallup. Dr. Glawe earned the Ph. D. under the direction of Rogers. It is truly a small (mycological) world!
