Specialty and Interests:
Identification
and characterization of virus-like pathogens of vegetatively
propagated horticultural crops including grapes, fruit trees
and hops. Current research focuses on two viruses affecting
sweet cherry production. The epidemiology of these pathogens
are being determined. The genomic organizations of these agents
are being characterized at the molecular level to determine
relationships to other known pathogens. Nucleic acid probes
and monoclonal antibodies are produced to aid in ascertaining
the relationship between virus infection and fruit maturity,
to estimate the distribution of the virus in regional orchards,
and to help study virus-vector relationships.
Another
research effort is developing microbial agents to protect
crops from pathogens. Present emphasis is on developing bacteria
to protect
grapevines from crown gall disease caused by Rhizobium
vitis.
