WSU Plant Pathology students Christian Aguilar and Shashika Hewavitharana attended the UW sponsored Science and Engineering Festival in Yakima, Washington on March 25th and 26th. The two interacted with middle school and high school students, teaching them about the importance of plant pathology and also demonstrated a kid-friendly DNA extraction protocol for the students. The students were both intrigued and disgusted by the rotten apples on display and were very excited to see and touch strawberry DNA and DNA model made of marshmallows and twizzlers. The teachers liked the DNA extraction protocol and the DNA modelĀ  as a teaching material.
