Statewide Retreat and Research Expo 2013

The department got together at NWREC, Mount Vernon for our statewide faculty retreat and plant pathology research expo on June 6th.  Hosted by Dr. Debbie Inglis, Professor of Plant Pathology and located at NWREC, faculty spent 1.5 days to discuss various issues facing the discipline and the department and chalked out action plans.

A reception and research expo was held on the evening of June 6th in NWREC.  Graduate students and post-docs presented posters on their ongoing research. As part of the research expo, a graduate student poster competition was held and prizes for top three posters were given.  The expo was organized by Dr. Axel Elling, assistant professor in the department. Drs. Gary Chastagner, Ken Eastwell and Naidu Rayapati served as judges. Stacy Mauzey (Drs. Brenda Schroeder and Tim Murray), Anna Leon (Dr. Gary Chastagner) and Samantha Downey (Dr. Scot Hulbert) received first, second and third place prizes, respectively for best posters.

Special guests and invitees at the reception included Dr. R. James Cook, Emeritus Professor of Plant Pathology and former interim dean of CAHNRS, and Mrs. Bev Cook, John and Adrian Roozen, WA Bulb Company, and Raina Spence, Director, Outreach – WA State Potato Commission.

On the morning of June 7th, graduate students were given a tour of the center and various field research projects being conducted by NWREC-based plant pathology graduate students. Big thanks to Dr. Debbie Inglis and Lindsey du Toit and their staff and students for making it a memorable event.  Ms. Cheryl Hagelganz, finance manager in the department took care of all the logistics and coordinated the travel, accommodations and everything else.
