Plant Pathology Professor Appointed as Director of the IAREC, Prosser
Dr. Gary Grove, professor of plant pathology has been appointed as the Director of the WSU Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center (IAREC), Prosser. Dr, Grove conducts research and extension in the area of fungal diseases and their management focusing on grapes, hops and tree fruits. His efforts in “electronic extension” have inexorably moved outreach toward automatic real-time delivery to smartphones and other hand-held devices for the agricultural stakeholder. Dr. Grove served as Director of Washington’s AgWeatherNet (AWN) and was credited with making it into an internationally recognized facility. The network provides 15-minute weather data that is updated once an hour and includes various pest models and disease and weather forecasts. The website has about 5000 registered users and drives many other weather-related extension efforts in Washington State. Dr. Grove received WSU College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) Team Excellence Award in 1998, CAHNRS Team Interdisciplinary Research Award twice (most recently in 2013), the CAHNRS Dean’s Meritorious Service Award in 2011, and Sahlin Award for Outreach and Engagement in 2012; and the APS Award for Excellence in Extension. He served as a member of APS Council 2003-2007.
Congratulations, Dr. Grove!
