Graduate Students to Receive Lindahl Memorial Scholarship

Two PhD students, Aaron Mahoney (MPS) and Sowmya Ramachandran (Plant Pathology) with Dr. Scot Hulbert, professor of plant pathology, were recent recipients of the Lindahl Memorial Scholarship. The Lindahl Scholarship was Sowmya Ramachandran established in 1947 as a memorial to Mr. John Lindahl by his children, Viva, James and John Jr.  The scholarship is awarded to students working in a course of study related to wheat research.

Sowmya’s PhD project involves the identification and functional characterization of conserved effector proteins from the transcriptome sequences of fungi causing stem rust, stripe rust and leaf rust and to use them to identify corresponding resistance genes from wild relatives of wheat.

Aaron’s goal is to identify the genetic mechanisms to Rhizoctonia spp. resistance in Aaron Mahoney synthetic wheat accessions.  Aaron is hoping to better understand the interplay between the pathogen and its host through molecular and phenotypic analysis.
