Global engagement of faculty
Dr. Naidu Rayapati, Associate Professor in Plant Pathology, Washington State University, in partnership with Dr. Amer Fayad, Associate Director, Integrated Pest Management Innovation Lab at Virginia Tech, organized a three-day workshop on “Diagnosis and Management of Plant Virus Diseases” at the Plant Pathology Division of the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, during August 10-12, 2016. Ms. Kim Hian Seng, IPM-IL Project Coordinator at iDE-Cambodia facilitated the workshop. The workshop was part of a long-term strategy towards building the scientific capacity of plant pathologists, extension personnel, and NGO personnel to mitigate crop losses due to viral diseases in vegetable crops in subsistence agriculture in Cambodia. The workshop included lectures on plant virus diseases affecting vegetable crops in Cambodia and practical aspects of management of viral diseases, and hands-on demonstration of diagnosis of plant viruses based on symptoms and serological assays. A total of 16 participants in the workshop included students and faculty from Royal University of Agriculture, University of Battambang and research and extension personnel from Plant Protection department, General Directorate of Agriculture of the Royal Government of Cambodia and farm advisors from Non-Governmental Organizations (viz. iDE, GRET, SNV and GIZ-ASEAN).
