Garfinkel selected for Smick Scholarship

Andrea Garfinkel, PhD candidate with Dr. Gary Chastagner, was selected to receive a $1,500 Alexander A. Smick Scholarship in Rural Community Service and Development. The committee noted her commitment to rural community service and agricultural outreach in Alaska.

Professor Alexander Smick was a WSU faculty member from 1930 to 1971. Professor Smick had an
outstanding record and very strong interest in community organization and outreach. The scholarship was
established through the generosity of Professor Smick’s widow, Mrs. Agnes Odegaard Smick. Mrs. Smick’s
niece, Ruth Holmes, continues to support the award.
